STOP BLAMING THE DOG START BLAMING THE OWNER!

Pitbulls are the absolute sweetest dogs.  They think of your babies as their own puppies and are gentle and loving when it comes to children.

However, there are bad breeders who breed them for excessive expression of their natural protectiveness.  And there are bad owners who encourage aggressiveness and territorial behavior.

Every dog is an individual. 

Let them be good dogs.  Be a good owner.

Let’s have a discussion about the fact that I have dealt with (averaging it out with various days off/vacations), probably 80-90 dogs a day for the last three years, hands-on. And of those 80-90 dogs, probably somewhere between 20-30 of them are pits and pit mixes. There have been exactly TWO (not on average. 2, period) that have caused me any damage, or that I’ve seen any worrying behaviour out of. One was an unneutered male who had been raised as a “guard dog” and never had a human tell him what to do. The other was owned by a drug dealer who went to prison and his dog ended up at the shelter with more energy than he knew what to do with and no training. Now, the number of labs and chihuhuas and random mixes I’ve been bitten by? That number is much higher. STOP DISCRIMINATING BASED ON BREED. It is literally NO DIFFERENT from being racist/homophobic/generally uneducated. </rant>

i own a three year old female pittie with an unknown past. it’s clear from certain behaviors that she’s been smacked around a bit and hasn’t had the easiest life. let me tell you… i’ve never met a gentler, sweeter, or more trustworthy dog around strangers, small children, and anyone else who walks her way. when people say, “oh, you gotsolucky, she’s one of those rare nice pit bulls”, it just kills me. she’s not an exception to the rule. she IS the rule. loving and protecting and snuffle-kissing, that’s what these dogs live for.

practice all necessary caution around everybreed of dog and always ask before petting an animal you don’t know, but please, please, pleaserecognize the beauty of this loving, gentle breed. and if you see a happy, healthy, well-behaved pittie out and about with their owner, please take the time to thank the owner for perpetuating the original standard.
